Traditional felt
Layers of bitumen felt bonded together, usually finished with chippings or a mineral surface. It is the cheapest option up front, but it has seams, it can blister and crack in the sun, and puddles shorten its life. Most of the flat roof leaks we see are old felt.
EPDM rubber
A single sheet of synthetic rubber laid over the whole roof, so on most extensions there are no seams at all. It stays flexible in cold weather, copes well with the sun, and is quick to fit. It is our go-to for straightforward roofs that need to be reliable.
GRP fibreglass
Layers of glass-fibre matting and resin that set into one hard, seamless surface, finished with a coloured topcoat. It is tough enough to walk on, great for complicated shapes and balconies, and looks very neat with trims along the edges.
Which one is right for you?
For a simple extension or garage, EPDM is usually the best value. For a roof you will walk on, or one with lots of corners and outlets, GRP is the stronger choice. We will also check the timber deck underneath first, because a new surface on a soft deck will not last.
Signs your flat roof needs attention
Standing water a day after rain, blisters or cracks in the surface, or damp on the ceiling below. If you are seeing any of these, a quick survey will tell you whether it is a repair or time for a new roof.
